My Job is to Make People Happy
Breeann and I went to Red Robin to eat. Love the all you can eat fries…I was having a blood sugar issue and told the waiter who was helping but ended up not being our help. I told him about my issue and he quickly came back with some chocolate milk. I said, “what’s this”? He said his brother has issues like this and it helps him so I figured it could help you…Needless to say I was grateful and disappointed that he was not our waiter. A woman was our help and it was uneventful, at least I don’t recall anything after that.
I think it was Breeann and Carter that were with me the next time I went and we got him as our waiter. I asked if he remembered me and he said he did. While we were looking at the menus, I noticed the tavern burgers had gone up and I asked him about it. He said it was on promotion before…I was bummed…
I asked him my lead in question about having choice if we automatically react…I don’t recall his exact answer but I Know he thought for a bit but was stumped…We chatted a bit more throughout our meal and he brought out our bill and I noticed he had reduced our prices on our meal…I was amazed.
I started to ponder his motive, his intent…I showed the kids what he had done…I mentioned to them that what he did was huge…(understatement)…I told the kids look at what he did…he created a win/win/win. A win for him, the store and me…He may have cost the store a bit of hard cash in that moment but he made himself certainly a bigger tip and he actually made the store more money because even though I really like the fries…he planted good seeds for me to want to return.
When he came back I asked him about what he did and told him what I told the kids…He told me “his Job is to make people happy”.
What a great attitude and perception. He has been waiting tables for 10+ years…he gets it. Very cool. Every time I go back I look for him to follow up on homework A.R assignments I give and to hope he will be our server.
Contrast this with another server who you could tell he did not want to be there at work and had attitude all over the place. Now the intriguing thing about this is maybe he was having a bad day, I get that and took that into consideration. However in watching him walk and his body language in general it was as if he was trying to be cool and almost like gangsta…maybe a little harsh of an observation but throughout the entire service process, his demeanor never changed.
When we got there, I was very clear to tell him that I wanted him to not forget the fries as a server in the past also didn’t get my hints…I also asked him about Iced Raspberry Lemonade and he went to check…never brought me one or even brought it up again.
I asked early on in the serving experience as mentioned about the chips and as we were waiting, he walked past our table 3 times, empty handed…so needless to say it was not a good experience and he didn’t get a good tip.
One thing I have to personally monitor about myself is my expectations and make sure they are realistic, taking into consideration that I am probably hyper aware of even the little things. So I work or being objective and neutral…always a good experience…
